ON-LINE MEETUP: Migrating to AWS

Migration of the on-premises infrastructure to the cloud might be a quite challenging task. The proper consistent in-depth planning together with the knowledge of the main difficulties of such a process helps to speed up the migration, make it more smooth and to avoid the predictable traps and problems. The process begins apparently with the discovery and detailed analysis of the existing infrastructure. Next, the corresponding migration path must be determined, which might include re-hosting, re-platforming, re-purchasing and refactoring. These paths or strategies point further to the adequate migration tools and procedures. Once these steps are done, the validation process must carefully evaluate and test the post-migration state of the infrastructure. Needless to say, this process must include security testing too. Through the following cutover stage, the systems can reach the operational state finally. The migration itself can‘t be limited only to the physical or technical procedures, additional aspects must be taken into account, e. g. costs, increase of agility, access to and adopting new technologies, changes in development paths, etc.

Our main goal is to describe on the high level the main stages of the process:

1) discovery and analysis,

2) planning and designing,

3) migrating, integrating and validating and

4) optimizing and operating.

Next, we will focus on the migration strategies of some typical key parts and services of the on-premises infrastructure. Finally, we will mention the supporting tools delivered by AWS, e.g. AWS Migration Hub.
